Ok, that video didn't turn out very well - I'll do another one and post it another night. Here's the lighting arrangment I have for my bike:
- Cateye 5 LED light on the handlebars - it can be set to blink or constant spotlight and it's the first light I've ever had on a bike where I can actually see the road 30 - 50' in front of me at night.
- Tikka Petzl headlight on my helmet - I can set it to blink or constant spotlight. The Tikka lights are very reliable.
- Bell Red Flasher on the bike - this is one I bought @ Walmart for $10 and it has like 5 different modes - it's very bright and rugged - I've dropped it at least 3 times and it just keeps on flashing.
- Nite Ize light on the spokes of my wheel - I like the concept of this light but it has one drawback - it uses the flat 2012 3V batteries that are about $4 set and it goes through a set of them for about every 12 hours of use.
- Life Gear Glow Blue and Green multi-function "stick" lights - my wife got me these for Christmas and they're the neatest thing since sliced bread - they glow, have a flashlight, a flasher (which is what I use on bike) and a whistle. I will never go anywhere where I will be out at night without sticking one of these in my fanny pack or pocket.
As I said in the video, it's almost comical - I probably look like a rolling Christmas tree going down the road - but you know what - I've never had a close call at night - never - people in vehicles give me a wide berth (they probably think that if I'm crazy enough to be riding a bike at night they don't want to get anywhere near me).
I have really good night vision but the real dangers for me riding a bicycle at night is obstructions on the road, potholes, glass, nails, etc. - it's not the people - they see me and swing wide!
I'm enjoying your blog! Thanks for putting the ad in The Source Weekly that alerted me to its existence.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about clearance at night. I commuted down Hwy332 to Dow for a couple years and it was scary in the daytime with the trucks and all, but at night (wintertime) I was well lit-up and the other vehicles gave a wide berth. I figured they had no idea what that was ahead of them but assumed a space alien and stayed clear. My best light was a xenon strobe that strapped to my arm. It was blinding! Wish I still had it, but it died and haven't found a replacement.
Keep it safe! Rooting for you in LJ, TX.
