The Columbia River jetties were built by building a railroad out a little at a time and building the jetty on the RR bed.
The North jetty is 6.5 miles long.
The waves in the Columbia River Channel can reach 25' and there are tales of 50' swells.
When the jetties were built, it washed out the sandbar shown in one of the book pics in the prior post.
The currents displaced it to the south side of the jetties between the south jetty and the NHL.
That sand is where the campground is now.
Cool huh?
