Question 1. Why do sailor coats have the wide lapels?
Answer - Because in the days of sword fighting on ships, sailors tarred their long hair into a matted ball to protect their neck and head from being cut off by a sword.
The wide lapels kept the tar off their uniform.
That's why sailors of old were called Tars.
Question 2: Why did sailors shirts and coats have a row of non-functional buttons on the sleeves?
Answer - To keep the sailors from wiping their noses on their sleeves.
