The Acceptance of Denial...

I'm about 525 miles into this 2000+ mile Pacific Coast Bicycle Tour....

So about 25% done...

I ran out of burner fuel, sugar and creamer yesterday and ate my last Ramen and Beef Nuggets this morning.

Heating water and cooking over an open fire...

And sleeping under the stars when weather permits.....

And - No - Raymond was not here... It was me...

So I drank my black coffee, ate my Ramen and loaded up....

And, yes, this is one snazzy setup.... If I do say so myself...and a lot of people have told me that...

And I got to thinking...

This is really all you need...

A Bike....

A Fire...

A Pot...

Some Food...

And something to lay on...

Pretty Basic.... And Primal.

We all, me probably the worst, have become accustomed to a society, culture, personal lifestyle and attitude of....

Entitlement...

I should have this...

I need this...

Many people have asked me why I do these tours...

Why I subject myself to riding all day and camping out and being exposed to the elements.

I think there are a lot of reasons....

But I think the most important reason is that I feel the need to go back to a base level of existence...

To feel what it's like to be cold and wet and shivering...

To be thirsty and not be able to quench my thirst...

To be hungry and stay that way...

To Reject my Sense of Entitlement...

To Deny myself the Conveniences of Life...

Why?

Because it makes me appreciate those things that much more and not take them for granted....

For in Denial...

There is Freedom....

And Discovery.

  1. It is a very good set up. Sleeping on the ground is not my cup of tea, but .... I can appreciate your endeavor to get back to basics. I know we live in an entitled world. I glad you are trying to change that for yourself. I commend you on that. Great job you are doing. I am learning and seeing a lot of that part of the country, that I will never get the opportunity to view. Thanks again for a job well done. Diana
