All I See is... Seafood!!!

Been focusing on fish and other seafood for my protein for the last couple of weeks and mixing it with my usual suspects....

Salmon and Swai fillets above a thin cut chicken breast.

Over Sweet Leaf Spring Mix, Sauted greens and lots of veggies with a boiled egg on top.

Been dealing with the fall out from being a < 2%er a lot lately. Will have a post on this Life Choice soon.

Eating like this is part of being a 2%er...

Chicken, scallops, salmon...

Who eats like this???

I do.

When you look at what you're putting into your body and it looks like this, i.e. Fresh, Colorful, Vibrant, Light and Lean....

Then you know your body will look the same when you eat it!!

Fish is done....

Salmon and Scallops are cooking...

This is the kind of grilling a hot cast iron skillet will give you.

That is a lot of beautiful veggies.

And that is a lot of Power Greens on top of a lot of veggies.

At this point, all you do is roll the seasoned greens into the cooked veggies and cover for 2 mins and they'll be perfect.

A meal and a base for several future meals.

Gorgeous and at least 50-60g of protein and not many calories -

No oil used on anything!!!

And you see how colorful the veggies are....

Cause I didn't cook them to death.

3 5oz beer sampler at WurstHaus...

That's all the beer you should need.

Keeps you on track with your diet but still gives your the opportunity to taste some great beers.

Paired with a grilled chicken salad kicked up with cayenne and some fresh jalapeños on special request.

See how easy it is to go out and still stick to your Paleo Plan?

Taking it to Tuesday!!!

Hello Tuesday morning!'n

Starbucks Cafe Americano with cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, organic cane sugar and half and half!!!

Need a big syringe so I can just shoot this stuff directly into my body!!

HEB Run!!!

Trying a mix of Swiss chard, spinach, kale and other greens....

And a new protein...

Scallops!!!

People keep asking me what I buy....

And week after week...

I keep taking this picture!!!

Eating tons of food and staying lean...

That's what Paleo is all about.

Here's the seasonings I'm using now...

And here's my favorite meat....

Courtesy of HEB.

Tenderize with a fork....

This also drives the seasoning into the meat thus enhancing the flavor...

Into a container and into the fridge...

Swai fillets with the same Moroccan seasoning.

And the ever present boiled eggs - the perfect food - has just the right proportion of protein, carbs and fat.

Greens, sweet leaf spring mix, tomatoes, radishes, carrots, radishes, banana, grapes.

Nicely pan grilled fish!!!

Here's the base for the protein...

That's the pan sauted greens on the bottom.

Add the fish and some banana and nuts.

Creatine and Fresca.

Yumster!!!

There you go....

Another Paleo meal with all the food groups on one plate.

Beach Trip with Family Fitness Friends

Saw a couple of ladies I do the Family Fitness classes with at Bucee's and it was obvious they were going to the beach...

And I got an invite!!

Hadn't eaten anything so went home and made me a tide me over meal of boiled egg, bananas, strawberries, grapes, blueberries and nuts....

And then went to cooking!!

Been using a lot of African, Middle Eastern and Indian spices lately.

Pork chops seasoned with Ras al hanout - Moroccan seasoning -

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_el_hanout

Garam masala -

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garam_masala

Cumin and turmeric

Cooked 2 fillets of salmon and a bunch of veggies seasoned with the same spices!!!

Can you say Paleo feast???

Leftover tuna and fruit!!

Even cold this tuna was fantastic!!!

The ladies were freaked out by my Walmart beach loungers that totally recline!!!

Got to say it was a great evening spent with new friends....

And everybody loved the meat and veggies kicked up with the African and Indian spices...

Amazingly enough.... Even the kids loved it.

They kept coming back for more and more between dips in the beautiful surf.

Beautiful Day, Beautiful Food, Beautiful Women...

What more can an Old Man ask for???

Life Hacking.... Cracking the Code Part 1

One of my favorite people in life....

One of the people I respect the most....

One of the people who continuously supports, challenges and inspires me to be better today than I was yesterday and to strive to be even better tomorrow....

My Son Aaron...

Is a Master of....

LIFE HACKING!!!

So what is Life Hacking?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_hacking

In short, it's finding the shortcuts in life that get you ahead....

I have a different term for it....

I call it...

Cracking the Code!

What are some examples of Life Hacking / Cracking the Code that I have experienced or DISCOVERED?

  1. Getting an Education... Kind of a No Brainer.... but the Bottom Line is that you have to work backwards from figuring out what kind of Lifestyle you want - i.e. Own your own home, drive a nice car, have good medical insurance, take 1 vacation a year, go out and eat twice per week, etc. - and then figure out how much that costs per year (Hint Hint.... That means doing a Budget) - and then figure out what careers or vocations you are interested in that pay enough to support that lifestyle - and then get an education that fits that vocation. For example, part of the planning I have done with my daughter is to talk to her about how she wants to live.... what she wants out of life aka desired lifestyle.  Her first response was, "I wanna live like you and Momma". Which means nice house, nice vehicle, have an entertainment budget, have medical insurance, wear decent clothes, have cable, decent cell phone and service, etc.  Bottom line is that, if you're on your own - i.e. want the type of lifestyle just described for just yourself - no couple / partner,  you gotta gross at least $60,000 per year.  There's 2080 hours in a 40 hour per week 52 weeks per  year so that's roughly $29 - $30 per hour on the payscale. That eliminates a lot of vocations / careers cause they just don't generate enough income.  The key takeaway is that you have to set yourself up for a lifestyle matching career going forward.  Otherwise, you'll always be frustrated..... or in debt.  So there's kinda 2 Life Hacking elements in 1 in this one..... Figure out what career will support your desired lifestyle and then get an education to support that career.
  2. Get an education as cheap as you can.... as mentioned in #1... where possible, take as many prerequisites as you can at a Community College.  They're usually much cheaper than a 4 year university and often offer as good or better an education because the classes are typically smaller and the teachers / staff are more accessible for counseling / tutoring / consultation. Here's an example.... At Brazosport College in Clute / Richwood Tx, the tuition is $65 / semester hour. State Universities like UT, A&M, Southwest Texas State are as high as $320 / semester hour!!!   So why on God's Green Earth would you pay 4 - 6 times as much for an education that you could receive while living at home. A student  can save $8 - $10000 per semester by going to a Community College for the first 2 years of a 4 year degree.
  3. Stay out of Debt!  Huh?  Everybody has debt - right?  WRONG!!! This is one of the Greatest Untold Secrets to Life Health and Happiness.... Nearly Everything hinges on this.  That's why the Powers That Be keep this little Gem in their back pocket and out of the public's eye.... They don't want you to know about it.... they want to keep you in debt with 20% per year credit cards and student loans and go ahead and buy that $40000 truck and that $200000 house... because you deserve it.  You work hard.... don't have the money to buy what you think you're entitled to (Entitlement - the Bane of the Modern Day Mindset - a subject for another post).... so here.... let me drown you for the next 30 years of your life in a Sea of Debt....where you have to work for the Man....to pay the Man! Impossible to be Debt Free? Bullshit! Just say NO!! Deny yourself the Instant Gratification of Getting Everything you Want Now!  Let me tell you how I did it.  In 1997, I got divorced from my first wife - one of the main reasons was she would not practice what I'm talking about in this Life Hacking element.... living debt free.  Anyway, I got divorced and after giving her half my retirement (what a fucked up deal Family Law is (another post in the making) and a 14 year commitment of monthly child support payments of  an ungodly amount.... I was basically starting over.  Got married to my 2nd wife, who, thank goodness, had my same attitude about spending and saving - one of the main reasons I married her. Bottom line is we both worked our asses off, lived in a very modest 1000 ft2 duplex in Lake Jackson that I had bought as rental property when I was 22.... lived off 1/2 of 1 of our salaries, paid off debts and saved for the future.... Smartest move I ever made.  So quit your bitching and your consuming and your adolescent obsession with buying shit and save your money and stay out of debt and only buy shit when you have the Greenbacks in the Bank to do it!!!!
  4. RENT DON'T BUY!!!  Another of the total Misdirections that the Powers That Be have thrown in the path of America to trip them and cause them to fall in a Life Hole (Life Hole - I like that term - there's another future post in the making)!!  Biggest Bullshit item that Financial America shoves down your throat is that buying a home is a good investment.  Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit.... I have done multiple studies with some pretty complex Excel worksheets to calculate the long term cash flow associated with BUYING A HOME vs RENTING and almost invariably, you would end up better off in the long run if you rented.  I'm not gonna go into the details but there are a lot of variables and assumptions in this calculation but the bottom line is that Real Estate, your home, because of the Games that the Powers that Be, play with Real Estate Valuations, think 1990's Real Estate Crisis.... 2008 Sub Prime Mortgage Crisis (completely financially engineered by the 20 guys that run the world) can vary widely in value from one year to the next - basically your home is like the stock market - so your financial stability can be fundamentally tied to WHEN you BUY your HOME and WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT..... when you buy it. Plus the cost of Insurance and Taxes, especially on the Texas Gulf Coast, not to mention Maintenance and all the other things you buy because you OWN a home vs RENTING one make BUYING a Home much more expensive than renting.  And don't give me the BS about deducting the interest off your taxes, because the first $12200 of deductions (for Married Filing Jointly) don't even count cause the GUMMENT gives you that anyway.... it's called a Standard Allowance Einstein.... http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Annual-Inflation-Adjustments-for-2013
  5. Educate yourself on the Cost of Things and Negotiate for Everything.... Examples - Texas is a Competitive state for Electricity... Check out www.powertochoose.org  What this means is that you need to shop for the best electricity price all the time.  One of the Life Hacking elements my Genius Son turned me onto.  Basically, I never sign a contract for over 3 months.  Every 3 months I go on the powertochoose website and shop for the best deal.  Haven't paid more than 8 cents / kilowatt hour of electricity for some time now and paid like 5.5 cents last year.  Has cut my electricity bill in HALF!! I'm talking saving like an average of $175 - $200 per month on my electricity bill!!!  Everybody's focused on insulating their house and putting in double paned windows and all that other shit that costs money and then they're paying 14 - 16 cents per kwh to Reliant or Texas New Mexico Power. WTF? Just buy cheap electricity!! It takes less than 15 minutes to sign up for a new electricity provider every 3 months - I'm with Champion Energy for the next 3 months - they email me weekly electrical use reports with monthly projections.... so for about an hour of my time spent a year, I save about $2000 - $2400 / year.... pretty good hourly rate right? Change subjects - buying a car - you gotta know True Dealer Invoice - go to www.kbb.com and punch in the vehicle you want and find out what the dealer invoice is and what a Fair Purchase Price is.... then go show that to the dealer and tell him what you'll pay for the vehicle not the other way around.  Bottom line for me is if it's a purchase of > $200, I'm gonna spend at least 15 minutes doing some research on what a good price is and then shop for the best price.  When I bought my 55" Samsung TV, I compared prices at Frey Electronics at Baybrook Mall - got a price $700 cheaper than the price at the Lake Jackson Best Buy Store - mind you this was on a $2700 TV so a huge % savings - documented the price, the person I talked to at Frey's, put it in a worksheet along with prices on other elements - Bose Cinemate II sound system, Sony Playstation 3, etc. - and took all that to the Electronics Manager at the Lake Jackson Best Buy - he took one look at the Worksheet and matched the price on everything - saved me like $1250 on a $4000 total Entertainment System purchase.... One of the Best Most Enjoyed Purchases I have ever made.... and even sweeter when I realize how good a deal I got on it.
So if you wanna get more out of Life....

Try Cracking Life's Code or Hacking the Shit out of Life by applying one or all of the above suggestions....

Will have another installment of this subject in the future.

I told you we were gonna kick Monday's ass....

How we doing so far?

Why do you do that? Because I can!!!

So what's this post about anyway?

Heh's da deal.....

You gotta decide what kind of life you want....

What it looks like....

What it consists of.....

What you will do each day....

Who you will do it with....

Where you will be....

What you are trying to achieve....

What makes you happy....

How You can make that happen....

You have to visualize your Ideal Life.

Then assess where you are....

What your Life is like now....

And then figure out how  to close the gap.

Make a Plan for taking your Life from Where It Is....

To WHERE YOU WANT IT TO BE!!!

This realization, transition, effort started for me when I left the employ of Dow Chemical in 2002..... so about 12 years ago.

At that point, I realized my life had changed and would never be the same.

I left the security of a long term corporate job and ventured out into the world of Contracting and other career paths.

Had a pretty good plan for transition and executed it....

Had to change it several times along the way....

But it was the right thing to do.

Was never happy doing the Dow gig....

Didn't fit in....

Didn't like the Cookie Cutter, must fit in a given mold way of dealing with people that most of Corporate America has.

Too much of a Rebel....

Outspoken....

Out of the Box thinker....

That makes stiff collared, corn cob up their ass people in a "safe" Corporate environment feel....

Uncomfortable, Threatened, Challenged....

People have a way of describing me in that context....

Intimidating....

Let me translate that for you....

Intimidating means.....

"You challenge Me, My Position and the System....

You make me feel uncomfortable....

Your energy, enthusiasm and drive to get to an endpoint...to solve problems.... to resolve conflict... to bring clarity quickly and efficiently make me feel less than what I want to be.....

You seem to know what you're talking about, have confidence in yourself and what you bring to the table....

And that bothers me....

So I'm gonna label you INTIMIDATING so I can try to thwart or control your efforts to make progress and make things better".

That's what INTIMIDATING means.

I finally realized that the DARK SIDE of Independent Contracting was the correct Career Path for me because I could make a difference on each project and effort I put my time into.

Less Wasted Time.... More Impact.... More Money.

Works for me.

So how does this little Walk through Wills Career Path tie into the concept of....

"Why do you do that?  Because I can!!!"

Well - there's a lot of moving parts to that machine...

But lemme fill in a few more gaps with a list of items that transitioned me from Where I Was to Where I Wanted to Be:

  1. I have always been "Old School" in terms of dealing with my finances - don't spend a lot on luxury / discretionary items, keep and track a detailed budget, save more than most, don't take a lot of risks with my money, pay cash for everything.
  2. Realized with the recent ZIRP (Zero Interest Rate Policy) - courtesy of the Powers That Be - that I was never gonna have enough money to officially retire, i.e. never work.
  3. So set up my career for one of part time work (15 - 30 hours per week) doing Independent Contractor Work.... I am a Chemical Engineer by degree, worked at Dow Chemical for 18 years as an employee and 4 as a contractor, so have a pretty good storehouse of technical, functional and practical knowledge on how to do technical work and problem solving...... turns out that's a pretty valuable thing in this day and age where most people coming out of school only know how to get info off the Internet and post to a Social Network site.  There's actually a demand out there for People like me who can Plan and Execute Work.... Imagine that.  My favorite saying when dealing with this sort of opportunity is that "I make Order out of Chaos".
  4. So Work Less.... Make Enough Money to Pay my Bills (which ain't much cause I pay cash for everything -  see #1)..... are you starting to detect a theme here?  It's called Simplicity..... Decluttering of Life.... Picking a few things that are important to you and focusing on executing those few High Priority Items with Lazer Focus, Purpose and Consistency.
  5. Always knew it, but finally stopped fighting the concept that, for me, everything in Life..... Success, Happiness, Peace, Fulfillment.... is dependent on me being Healthy.... and not just Healthy.... but EXTREMELY FIT. I love to work out, to push myself to Mental, Emotional and Physical Limits... it is the Core of My Happiness and more importantly, it is the only way for me to be a Positive, Productive and Supportive Person to those I love.  It is a way of being my best so I can be my best for others.... Probably the most important and fundamental element and critical Life Change I have incorporated in my Daily Mindset and Activities over the last few years.
  6. So I set up every element of my Lifestyle to support that Foundation Element of being Fit, Active, Working out.... Diet and Nutrition, Exercise, Recovery and Recuperation, Career and all other aspects of Life.
So when People ask me...

Why do you pay so much attention to your diet?

Why do you workout so hard? So much? So consistently? So many different types of workouts?

Why do you not work full time?

Why do you live your life like you do?

I simply say....

Because I can.

Monday Morning Kick-Off!!! Less Water... More Coffee!!!

Probably my favorite song right now!!!

Love Snoop Dogg's Bad Boy Image....

But just like Ice Cube....

He's just a regular dude at heart!!!

And speaking of heart.... and beating faster...

That's a Tall Cafe Americano with 2 shots added....

So 4 shots total....

Less Water.... More Coffee!!!

With a generous dusting of Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Chocolate and a splash of Half and Half!!!

Can you say Rocket Launch???

Set up at Starbucks and.... as promised a few days ago...

Gonna spend a couple of hours cranking out some posts that have been on my mind a while...

So sit back.... Relax..... Have a cup of Coffee with a couple of extra shots.... Read.... Enjoy....

Through the Land of Somewhat Educated Opinion with a couple of extra shots of  Philosophy, a dusting of Humor and a good splash of down home Bullshit!

Let's kick this Monday in the Ass!!
