I was there with the Dynamic Duo Brother and Sister Team from Philadelphia, Neil and Genoveve.
Neil and Genoveve's bikes had double chain rings on the front and 11-28 road gears on the back... Not the right setup for touring and for the climbs that are part of this Pacific Coast Tour.
So while we were at Harris Beach State Park, I did a quick Internet search for local bike shops and came up with Escape Hatch Sports & Cycle Shop which I'll provide the info on in the next post.
Anyway - to make a long story longer, N & G had the back end of their Raleigh Road Bikes rebuilt with 11-34 gears, a new chain and a longer arm dérailleur and can now climb like a scalded dog without putting so much torque on their drive train that they were bending the teeth on the lowest gears in the original cassette.
This pair are built for stout but Genoveve was complaining about her knees hurting and I explained it was because she was putting so much strain on the pedals in the climbs because of the "highway gears" on the bike.... Thus the need for change.
After leaving Brookings, we crossed into Cali and I stopped at Ray's Place and Resupplied before cruising into JSSP.
Beautiful roadway through the redwoods. Just great. It was nice of you to assist to help the siblings with their bikes. You are such a knowledgeble person.
