My 'Rules of 3'...

In the Bible, the number 7 is a sign of completion...

Of perfection.

In my experience, the number 7 has had little or no significant meaning in terms of predicting future events or providing actionable information.

But the number 3....

Now that's another story.

Based on repeated experiences over the last 30 years...

I have developed 3 Rules of 3...

Ok. Maybe they're not real Rules but more like...

Rules of Thumb....

Guidelines....

Good Things to Know.

Anyway, here they are:

Rule 1.  If you have no idea what the answer is, say 3. You'll be amazed how many times you are right.

Rule 2.  When faced with uncertainty, question or a difficult decision, ask or present to 3 independent, informed sources the same question or problem.  If they give you the same answer or recommendation, there is a 90% probability that the common answer from the 3 different sources is the correct or best answer or decision.

Rule 3. Trouble, Bad News or Negative Events tend to come in Clusters of 3 and typically within 3 days of each other.

This last week was a perfect testament to Rule 3.

The first event was my 25 year old Maytag dryer went out last Wednesday. So there goes x hundred $ to replace that.

As soon as I learned about the dryer going out, I told my wife - "Better look out.  I can feel it.  Trouble always comes in Threes.  There's gonna be at least 2 other bad things that'll happen in the next few days."

Then the next day, I learned about a legal matter involving a family member that will have significant negative time and cost ramifications for that person.

Then on Saturday, I learned of another negative event that will likely cost me some moolah.

I could feel the stress starting to eat at me and cause me to focus on things that were out of my control.  That is my natural tendency. I am a Worrier.

In the past, I've let it get the best of me.

This time, I backed off, thought through what I needed to do, put the plans into action and then focused on stress relief.

Intense Exercise and Good Food.

One of the things I've decided, especially given the frequency and intensity of my workouts,  is that I'm not eating enough protein to build lean muscle mass and gain strength.

Randall's had a special on Pork Chops so I bought a package of those and treated them with my standard meat tenderizer - dry rub.

I bought some more veggies and focused on treating myself right with a combo of pork chops, tofu, boiled eggs, squash, zucchini, peppers, tomato, arugula and alfalfa sprouts.

Nice morning temps.

So I fixed a light, vegetable rich breakfast with a small piece of pork before my Body Pump workout.

And then followed that with a full blown post workout recovery meal.

Things are already looking up.

Just got word...

Negative event 3 may end up being a non-event.

Remaining calm and controlling emotions during negative times has not always been my strong point....

But I'm working on it and I'm getting better at it.

So the next time a Rule of 3 situation rears its ugly head....

Keep your head, consult reliable resources, act on what you can control...

And then go get a good workout and a healthy meal.

Things may not get better, but at least you'll be in a better state to handle it.

Let's NOT Talk about Your Sex Baby!

As anyone who reads this blog regularly knows by now, I only write about my real life experiences.

I don't make shit up.  I don't have to, cause as boring as my life is, I still encounter enough really weird or exceptional shit to write about pretty regularly.

And here's something that has happened to me on 3 first dates (well I really wouldn't call them first dates - let's just call them first encounters) with women in the last 3 months.

And as my regular readers know, my many Rules of 3 Rule, and one of those Rules of 3 states that if the same thing happens to you 3 times, it's worth noting.

So what's it all about Alfie?

This may not seem weird and inappropriate to a lot of people but to me it just struck me as odd and sent up distress flares, red flags and SOS signals each of the 3 times.

On first meetings with 3 different women, each of the women revealed significant and intimate details about their past sex lives - WHAT!!!!

Yep - you heard me right.  Now in their defense, I have been told by many people that I'm a good listener (which is really hard to believe but Hey Whatever) and maybe they feel comfortable talking to me about anything.

But Geez folks, I mean Ladies (and in some cases, that might be a stretch of vocabulary) - TMI.

I mean seriously - for all you Women out there - what possesses you to think that the guy you're with wants to hear about the fact that you've been blessed with great lovers in your life or that you only consider a man a good lover if he is "amply" outfitted.

I dunno.... maybe I'm barking up the wrong trees.  I used to think I was a pretty good 1st impression judge of character.... maybe I'm slipping.

But honestly, I have absolutely no desire to hear about the sex you had with your past husbands, boyfriends, lovers, dogs or girlfriends.

If we're gonna talk about Sex Baby, let's talk about...

You and Me.

People Come and People Go and Life Goes On

This is the first post to be written as a result of a demographically diverse 11 reader survey and selection from 24 possible blog post ideas / titles / topics.

Here is some data on that selection process:

This is interesting and notable in many ways and on many different levels, perhaps, the most important of which is that this is the first time I have ever done anything like this.

Ask a group of readers to select the priority and subject matter of composition of future Post Topics through random survey.

And perhaps an Evolution, a Revolution or at least a Change in my Writing and Approach to Writing the Posts for this blog.

That being from a self-generating, self-limiting or self-induced creative process that was whim and wave to whatever thought or experience came into my mind or got in my way.

To more of an "On Demand In Demand" approach to Creative Writing.

Generating readable and interesting Intent and Content based on Reader Request.

Which maybe represents a subtle but substantial change in direction for me and this blog.

From Casual Conversation about my Life to a more Meaningful Discussion of Life Principles, Philosophy and Rhetoric that may be suitable or even marketable to a broader audience.

I've been toying with the idea of a "Discovery" book for a long time and maybe this is the Beginning of the End of that effort.

I don't know - let's take it one day and one post at a time - and see what happens and what, in the process, we....

Discover....

Together.

Which perhaps is a good segue into the beginning of the content that actually addresses the title of this post.

I couldn't write any of this or at least a significant portion of what I write without -

The People in My Life and The People that Pass Through My Life and the People that Move On.

And the Impact they have on me, the Thoughts and Emotions they Evoke and the Love, Hate, Triumphs and Tragedies I Experience with them.

A friend of mine recently sent me a YouTube video that talks about People coming into your Life for a Reason, a Season or a Lifetime...

https://youtu.be/SMXWh9qwGZ8

Pretty cool concept and pretty appropriate for this post.

Coincidentally, the 4th slide of this video, looks very much like a picture of St. Mary's Lake and Goose Island in Glacier National Park, which was the site of my 2nd marriage.

Oh boy, here it comes, excuse me for a minute or 30, while I go cry....

Goddammit - this collage brings back a lot of Great Memories.....

And a lot of Pain.... most of it Self-Inflicted.

But that unfortunately, administered a lot of Collateral Damage and Pain to People I Loved Most.

Yeah -

People Come and People Go and Life Goes On.

But you leave a little Piece of Life and a Piece of Your Heart and Soul with Every Person You Leave behind.

I'm really not sure where to go with this Post after that little bit of self-reflection.

So what do you do when you've stabbed yourself in the Heart or....

Someone else stabs you in the Heart....

Or the Back?

I don't know.... I don't fucking know.

I guess some of us resort to booze or drugs or food or whatever is your Self-Medicating Drug of Choice....

Or something worse.

The rest of us just Move On, perhaps in a Diminished, Depleted or Damaged State.

Suffering from Numbness of the Heart, Mind or Spirit.

Or from Delusions of what Love is or isn't and with issues of Trust or Love and Trust or with Trusting in Love.

But We Move on because for Us....

Life Goes On.

Geez - this is getting pretty fucking depressing.

Come on Wills - pick yourself up and present something of Love, Faith and Hope to your Readers....

Something befitting Some Bright Spot, Some High Note or Some Success in the Struggle with....

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Well - the Pain, Reality, Hope and Good News of the Matter is that Life does Go On.

And as long as that is true, there is Opportunity -

For Healing and Restoration - which usually doesn't happen ALONE.

It happens with the Recognition, Realization and Exploit of Opportunities - with the Risk of Failing - with the Risk of Disappointing - with the Reality of...

Sharing Your Life with Another Person and them sharing their Life with You...

For a Reason, a Season or a Lifetime.

And you know what?

It works - at least for Me - taking the Risk... Seizing the Moment...

Running that Gauntlet One More Time and letting Life and Love take another whack at me.

I had this recent experience that kinda illustrates this concept.

I was riding a shuttle from Santa Fe to the Albuquerque Airport and was looking forward to a trip to Texas for Work and to visit Family.

It was a morning pick-up of the Sandia Shuttle from the Hotel Santa Fe and I got on the shuttle and sat in the front seat next to the driver and just as soon as we got going, you know me, I'm all amped up on Caffeine and High on Life in general, so I'm introducing myself to the Driver and jibber-jabbering with him and eventually, I turn around in my seat and I'm addressing the audience of fellow shuttlers and introducing myself and you know what I get which is to be expected....

Looks of bewilderment or annoyance or a polite smile from the Peanut Gallery with likely thoughts of....

I wish this Goofy Mother Fucker would just shut up and leave me the Hell alone and in peace and quiet

OR

Who does this guy think he is - God's Gift to Humanity?

OR

Ok - No more - you get the picture or the scene....

EXCEPT.....EXCEPT....

There was this lone Dissenter, in this Sound of Silence, in the 3rd row back that...

Smiled and Engaged!

Aha!!! Praise the Lord and Sound the Trumpets!!

A Fellow Rebel, A Challenger to the Doldrums, Ho-Hum and Zombie Apocalypse State of the World.

Yep - a lady who talked back.

That was back in October 2016....

And then - weirdly enough - that same Face in the Crowd of the Shuttle coming into Focus -

Was on the same shuttle in June 2017 when I traveled to Texas again.

On this occasion we were departing to different destinations from the same concourse of the airport at about the same time.

Hmmmm - what a Co-ink-a-dink!

So I followed up on the Shuttle Conversation with a text - cause of course I had gotten this lady's number after the 2nd shuttle meeting - cause I'm figuring or wondering -

Is this Chance
Or Fate and
Do I write it off as Happenstance
Or Participate?

Stop it Will-enem
This is ABQ not
8 Mile and
You are Will-i-am
Not Eminem.

Repping Rhymes and Rapping Aside - You know me - I like to tempt Fate!!!

So anyway - I'm sitting at my gate watching her sitting at her gate - Yeah - you can't make this shit up - this actually happened.

And I text her and ask "Want some company until your plane leaves?"

If surprise could be captured in a text reply "Sure!" and hope and curiosity could be implied in a glance up as I walk over, then No Doubt it was.

So we sit and talk some more until her plane leaves and I say in her departure...

"Text me when your plane lands and when you get home so I know you made it OK" and I give her a hug and a kiss.

And she did....

Kiss and Hug me back and Text me back.

And that was that.

People Come and People Go and Life Goes On.

But sometimes they Reappear.

Like when I'm sitting at the bar at LaFonda 4 months later...

Which incidentally and coincidentally - I never do - sit at the bar at LaFonda that is, or even go to the LaFonda bar that is.... except a couple of times and both of them have resulted in really incredible meetings with Women... if it happens a 3rd time (Remember my Rules of 3) -

https://willsonwheels.blogspot.com/search?q=rules+of+3

https://willsonwheels.blogspot.com/2014/07/another-rule-of-3.html

Then I'm gonna start thinking the LaFonda Bar is some kind of epicenter for significant happenings in My Life or at least significant Human Encounters of the 3rd Kind - for me.

Anyway - back on track here - so I'm sitting at the LaFonda Bar and I look up and I see this same lady standing out in the hall texting...

And my first thought is - Ok Wills - do you really want to do this?  Do you want to go engage this lady? I mean - there's no way she's gonna fucking remember me or whatever - so you're just setting yourself up for disappointment - but Fuck It - I love Pain and Disappointment - I must - I mean look at my Whole Fucking Life....

So I just stride over there and say "Hi _________ - How are you doing?"

And she says "Hey William - I was just texting you!" and I look down at my Phone.....

And Smile.

So Yeah....

People Come and People Go and Life Goes On.

Parents, Friends, Family and Spouses die.

Marriages fail.

People cheat on you.

You cheat on people.

Children leave and start their own lives.

You are Alone.

Someone comes into your Life.

They leave.

You are heartbroken...

And Life goes on.

This is the Simple and Certain Circle of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It is the Mystery, Master and Mistress of Life.

People Come and People Go....

And Life Goes On.

Rules of 3, Words to Live By and other Random Thoughts....

In all things..... simply SIMPLIFY.

And Rules of 3 always apply:

If it has more than 3 ingredients, DON'T EAT IT!

If it takes more than 3 sentences to explain, DON'T BELIEVE IT!

If it costs more than $300, spend at least an hour researching the best option and the best price.

If you don't have the money in the bank to buy it, DON'T BUY IT!

If you haven't used it in the last 3 years, you don't need it, GET RID OF IT!

That includes everything..... including spouses.....especially spouses.

If you can't pull your car in the garage, you got too much shit!  SELL IT!

If it breaks down 3 times, fix it and then SELL IT!

If you can't fight it and beat it or run from it and escape.... LOSE SOME WEIGHT!

TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST!..... if you don't, you're no good to any of those people you say you love so much.

When in doubt, RENT DON'T BUY!

It gives you time to check out the product, the area or the lay without risking any long term capital - monetary or emotional.

ASK FOR A LOWER PRICE ON EVERYTHING!.... No is an answer not a death sentence.

GET AN EDUCATION!.... it's expensive to be poor.... and uneducated.

When your gut tells you something's wrong - LISTEN!

You know your gut has a brain right?

Another Rule of 3...

Long time readers of my blog and people who know me well - which is a very small # of people - know that I have a number of...

Rules of 3....

One I haven't talked about in a while is when something unique or noteworthy happens 3 times in a relatively short period of time.

This is a succession of like events that requires immediate attention and action to....

Avoid something bad happening....

Or take advantage of....

A Good Opportunity...

Like ringing a bell 3 times to announce a dinner...

Or repeating something important to yourself 3 times...

So you don't forget it.

Happened to me tonight...

So I took action.

Standing on the Shaky Ground between Have To and Want To

I was trying to remember the inspiration / situation for the title of this post and I think it was another one of those past random conversations I had with the Blonde Bombshell at Praxis. I think we were both bitching about not wanting to do our own respective workouts and she uttered that magnificent one liner that provides the title to this post.

But frankly, there's a lot of situations in life that pose that internal and external struggle, that is, doing What You Have To vs What You Want To.

But I want to stay practical and functional on this post and relate a few experiences from my own life which can be summarized in the following 2 categories applicable to "Have to vs Want to":
  1. Educational / Vocational
  2. Relational
From my own experience and through observation of others, I have found that a lot of situations of Have to vs Want to originate with Financial Security / Independence. I mean - let's face it - you gotta make a living right?

And here's the little trick that so many people miss and / or that so many parents don't share with their kids and I'm going to Red Bold this concept / statement for importance.

You have to match your education and the resulting career / vocation with an income and long term earning potential that will support the kind of lifestyle you want to live.

And that requires someone in the process to know about how much it costs to live - which implies or actually specifies - that someone has made out a projected budget or has some general rules of thumb on cost of living.

For example, I know that for a single, young person to live in today's world and have their own apartment / house / place to live, a decent car / transportation, adequate medical insurance, decent food and supplies, pay the utilities and the cell phone bill, have TV and cable, have any kind of leisure activities / entertainment and going out to eat AND putting money into a retirement fund (401k, 403b, IRA, etc) - blah blah blah - yes, I'm listing all the items in a budget - it takes between

$60000 - $70000 per year in gross income minimum!

And I'm talking in a "non-inflated area" for real estate / rental / cost of living so this doesn't apply in New York, Boston, San Francisco, etc.

Because when you take out Income Tax (18 - 25%), Social Security (7.65%) and Medicare (2.2%) and potentially state income tax (depending on where you live and work - another 8 - 10%) and at least another 10% into savings, you're left with around $32500 net based on $65000 gross.

And that's only $2700 per month - which sounds like a lot of money but ain't jack shit when you look at the cost of housing, car payments and medical insurance these days - just to name 3 of the biggest budget outlays.

I mean you gotta look ahead at the time period for actually working which is say, 30 - 40 years, and then the time period after you quit working and make sure that whatever work or vocation you're considering doing at age 20 - 25, matches up income-wise so that you can do a few things you want to do while you're doing the things you have to do - the biggest of which, is working.

So - Vocation has to match Cost of Living in the Lifestyle you choose or you may end up doing a whole lot of Have to and very little Want to.

Let me give you 2 personal examples of how I have seen this work out.

Many who know me - which are few - have heard this little life anecdote.

When I was a Senior in High School at the then Forest Park High (now Westbrook) in Beaumont Tx, there was a Career Fair in the School Cafeteria and I can remember walking into the cafeteria from the long hall and pausing at the entrance and looking to my left and seeing a table / booth for Texas Parks and Wildlife.

And anybody that knows me knows I was Nature Boy growing up - See this post for a description of that -  http://willsonwheels.blogspot.com/2017/12/william-party-of-one.html

Bottom line is I wanted to be either a Park Ranger or a Game Warden.

So naturally I followed the Pursuit of my Passion and walked over to the TPWD booth and started talking to them and in the course of the potential career conversation, I asked....

"So how much does a Game Warden make?"

$12000 / year was their reply - now this was in October, 1979.

Now let me tell you if you don't know - I grew up poor - dirt poor.  We didn't miss any meals and never resorted to welfare but we probably should have.

And because of that, I started working making money at age 7 mowing yards and helping a local live bait retailer seine carp and minnows and helping him with odd jobs around his truck farm.

Then at 10, I started working in an auto parts store and at 12, I was pressure washing and painting houses.

What's the point of this little childhood and adolescent career description?

Hell - by the age of 12, I knew the value of a dollar and what it took to make it and what it bought and didn't buy because I bought clothes and groceries and things I needed with my money cause my parents weren't making enough to supply me everything I wanted and needed.

So - bottom line, at 17 years old - I knew $12000 per year wouldn't pay for my bottom line when I was 20 - 21 years old.

A little discouraged, I turned from the TPWD booth and literally walked to the opposite side of the career fair on the right side of the cafeteria - interesting how they were 180 degrees juxtaposed from one another - and walked up to the table with the "Lamar University School of Chemical Engineering" banner hung over it.

And I was pretty good at math and science in high school so I asked the lady sitting behind the table how much a chemical engineer made....

$24000 per year!

Aha - a Career is born.

This was a major crossroads in my life because I chose my Passion that would've left me dirt poor over a Practice that would afford me a lifestyle that I knew I wanted.

Was that the right decision?

38 years later - I still don't know the answer but you get the picture.

So here's a 2nd example.

My daughter entered college not really knowing what she wanted to do and, against my will, but not including my pocketbook cause I had already shelled out over $250000 gross in child support by the time she turned 18), her mother and her decided she would go to Texas State University.

Long story short, my daughter spent 3 semesters and upwards of $60000 figuring out she didn't want to be an accountant or a criminal justice major.

I always thought she would be a great Nurse and had told her that since she was in high school, so I set down with her and did some research on the requirements and the career path and cost of tuition / schooling to do that and the bottom line was as follows.
  • Starting RN's at that time, 2012, made a minimum of $60000 per year.
  • She could take her existing credits from Texas State, earned at over $315 per semester hour and transfer them locally to Brazosport Community College, and take the remaining pre-requisites for entry into several different Texas Nursing Schools at $55 per semester hour at BCC.
  • Once the Nursing Prerequisites were met, she could apply for entry into universities such as University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (the oldest and one of the most renowned Nursing Schools west of the Mississippi - founded in 1896) for $205 per semester hour and it would only take 3 additional semesters to get here BS in Nursing.
  • What all this meant was that for less than $18000, she could get a 4-year degree with a BS in Nursing, take her Texas certification for Registered Nurse immediately after receiving her degree, and be working a month later making $60000 + / year in a Texas hospital.
Now if that's not Bang for the Education Buck - $60000 / year income for an $18000 college cost - then I don't know what is.

At this point, she is making a good living and enjoying her career.

While she is on the long term career path to being financially independent, she is living a comfortable, self-supporting lifestyle as a 24-year old single woman.

So, from these 2 examples, one of the ways to step off the "Shaky Ground between Have to and Want to" is to what????

Get a Fucking Education in a vocation that makes more than $60000 / year for a single member household income!!!

Now before all you folks out there without College Educations start flexing on me, understand this.

I know quite a few people out there who have no degrees or 2 year technology or technician degrees who are Craftsman, Specialists or whatever vocation fits this career plan like Welders, Pipefitters, Chemical Plant Operators, Rig Operators, Instrument and Electrical Technologist, Plumbers, Electricians and other trade crafts and they make GREAT MONEY - many make more than people with 4 year degrees.

So this is another path - but they still had to put in their time to learn the vocation that rewards them with an adequate income - Remember the 10000 hours!!!!

Now here's the Contra Statement to this Learning -

If you don't make the right decisions in the 18 - 25 year range on determining a career path that will yield an adequate income that will outpace inflation, then you will find yourself on the...

Shaky Ground between Have to and Want to -

Because you'll always be working for the Man.

Ok - enough preaching about Education and Career and Adequate Income Brother Wills -

Let's move onto another field of decision making where the Shaky Ground between Have to and Want to resides.

Relationships!

Let me lay out this little scenario for you and I don't want to hear a bunch of feedback about monetizing wives and kids and marriages.

If you're stupid enough - excuse me - there's the Dark Side of Wills coming out again - and incidentally I think I will be penning that post next.

Anyway - if you are unwise to the World and the Ways of the World or Unmazebright (there's a Tony Robbins term if I ever heard it) enough such that you don't understand Marriage and Kids is a Huge Financial Commitment and Drain on your past, present and future income and self, health and well-being....

Then just Rock On Einstein and see how far that gets you - like in the Poor House or Family Law Court or an Early Grave.

In a nutshell, if you are marrying someone - don't matter which side you're on - you're the Man or the Woman - and that other someone doesn't have a clue about money and how to make it and budget it and spend it and save it - or you're the one that's like that and then you start compounding the problem by having kids that cost even more money and you're not making enough money to support all this ShitStorm of Loving, Touching and Squeezing, then you're gonna find yourself real quick -

Standing on the Shaky Ground between Have To and Want To.

Cause you're gonna be working 12 - 16 hours a day 6 - 7 days a week to try to make ends meet.

The other element is just the wear and tear on your Mind, Body and Spirit that an unhappy, unhealthy relationship can have on you.  It's not so much being a Money Drain as it is a Mind Fuck.  You find yourself working for someone in a relationship that you don't really want to be working for...

Or even being around.

Either one of those Relational Issues will make you a stressed out, unhappy person.

Let me put it this way -

I'd much rather be the Lady at Praxis talking about the Shaky Ground between Have to and Want to being the decision on whether or not she does a hard workout on a sunny day in Santa Fe.

Because that implies she's got a lot of shit going right -

She cares about her body and her health enough to be working out.
She's got the extra time in her life, career and family commitments to be working out.
And most importantly, she's got a career that allows her to pay the monthly dues at a CrossFit style gym, so that she can work out.

Sounds like somewhere along the way, she made the right decisions about Education, Careers, Money and Relationships.

There's enough Potholes, Traps, Trips, Piles of Dogshit and Shaky Ground that have to be stepped over, around and avoided in this Path of Life already.

Get past the majority of those in Life by making Good Decisions that affect the Critical Crossroads of Career and Relationships.

It's one of the Greatest Discoveries and Keys to Success and Happiness you will ever experience.

Sing it Delbert!!!

Recap of yesterday

If you haven't noticed I'm riding my spare bicycle all over town for my errands... basically if it's not at night and I don't need to haul anything, I'm riding my bike... one thing I don't want to do is give back everything I've gained.... or gain back everything I've lost....

I'm as light now as I've been in at least 3 years.... still got about another 8 - 10 lbs to go... but definitely going in the right direction.

Like I said in an earlier post, I may have to go back on the road to get some rest.... but here's what I knocked out yesterday:
  • cleaned house, washed and folded clothes, washed dishes, ordered firewood, paid bills, paid taxes, checked on tires and tried to meet with the Brazosport Facts editor, made a haircut appointment....
  • made contacts in Santa Fe re inquiries on houses, real estate...
  • and oh yeah.... mowed and weedeated the yard.... actually blowing the leaves off the roof, out of the gutters and out of the flowerbeds was the hard part.... worked on this for about 3 hours till about DARK:30 and was about to go put on a bicycle helmet with the headlight on it and continue....

when I decided it was time to quit (when I was basically mowing in circles in the dark).... just like me .... just keep bulling forward.... sometimes I wonder.... anyway I finally shut 'er down....

and ran (well I actually drove my truck) over to Randall's to pick up some milk, OJ, Tecate, Limes and light bulbs..... geez half the lights in the house were out....

The wife gets home about then and I knock out another Cast Iron Skillet dish - kind of a repeat of the morning meal (I liked it for lunch... why not for supper!).... we talked about the day while she drank Chardonnay and I drank ice cold Tecate in a frosty mug with a lime soaked rim coated with salt and I mowed (yeah I know mowing was still on my mind cause I didn't finish - Grrrr!) through a platter full of sausage, tortillas, bell pepper, onion, garlic, jalapenos and 2 eggs.... Man I was so hungry...

Me and Mals got up from the table and went to the living room to watch my favorite good guy - bad guy.... Jack Bauer!

Yep - here comes 24 again!

I guess I'm gonna have to figure out some kind of satellite link up or something while I'm on the road..... cause I ain't missing my 24!

I mean come on..... this bad ass dude does most of the shizbah we wish we all could do but we gotta follow the rules.... only Jack got his own set of rules....

Ok I know I digress.... anyway I kept my eyes open long enough to see Renee Walker make it inside the Russian "ring of terror"....

and then hugged and kissed the wife and kicked the dog (just kiddin' - I don't have a dog) and staggered off to bed....

Whew! ...... I need a vacation!

A War of Attrition

War of Attrition? Huh? What War of Attrition?

I'm talking about the War of Attrition that's being waged on your body each day by the environment, stress, bad diet, sedentary lifestyle and aging.

It's a natural, never ending and degenerating war that has but one outcome....

A War we ultimately all lose.

Morbid maybe.

But it is what it is.

And as in all wars, the better you know your enemy, the better defense you can put up.

So how do you turn an imminent loss into a celebrated win.

By staying off the effects of aging and degeneration by maintaining as healthy and active a lifestyle as you can.....

Until the day you die.

That is your Goal....

That is your Victory...

And how do you do that?

First off.

Win the Food War...

It's the War within the War or at least one of the major battles.

Arm your body with the best defense and offense you can on a meal by meal day by day year over year basis.

You are in a Cage Battle with a bigger, faster, more ruthless opponent that will overwhelm you with misinformation, temptations, cravings, peer pressure, stress and every other opportunity to eat shit and die. Literally.

Because that's what 90% of the food out there is....

Shit.... Waste....

Something that your body passes right through absorbing nasty chemicals and preservatives, sugar, empty calories and gaining little or no food value from it.

Sorry for the crass description but that's the way it is.

Now the good news....

The positive perspective....

Select the right foods, eliminate the waste,

Win the Food War.

What does that campaign look like???

Well for starters -

Buy the right food.

Cause if you don't buy it, you won't eat it.

Simple but Powerful Combat Tactic.

Rules of Engagement:

If it's processed don't buy it.

If it's frozen, canned, in a box or bag or laden with salt, sugars, preservatives or Blue Fuck Me #35, don't buy it.

If there's more than 3 ingredients on the ingredient list, don't buy it.

If it's fresh, beautifully and richly colored, unprocessed and organic, buy it.

There....

That's half the battle.

Stay tuned.

This war has just begun.

Y'all wanna take a little Tour of Monterey and Carmel today?

Well - I been reserving judgment on these Hostelling International Hostels because of my Rule of 3....

I'll tell you about that on a Different Day...

But now that I've stayed in the 3rd one, I have to say I'm really impressed.

They're clean, well-organized, well-run and the other guests all seem to understand and follow the rules.

It's weird....

In this day and age, you can still find strangers from all walks of life who can come together in a temporary communal environment and get along.

Perhaps the UN should check out the whole hosteling concept.

Anyway, there's HI hostels south of me in Cambria, San Luis Obispo, LA - Santa Monica, LA - San Pedro and San Diego.

I plan on trying to stay in each of them where appropriate to my plan and schedule.

http://www.hihostels.com/

As far as price comparisons go, here's what I know so far:

State Park Hiker Biker - $5 to $6 per day

State Park Individual Site w/ Electric and Water - $27 to $35 per day

Hostel Bed with all the amenities I've shown in the pics - Shower, Kitchen, Common Area, Computer and Internet, etc. - $30 per night

Budget Motel - $70 to $100 per night.

I like the Hostel option because it's middle of the road on price, high on features and service and affords me the opportunity of talking with different folks from around the world.

So what do you want to do today?

I think I'll check and see if the Hostel will rent me a bed for another night.

I kinda wanna do a tour around the Monterey / Carmel area today with the Mule unloaded and see what I can see.

How's that sound?

Oh....

And before you think I'm TOTALLY WORTHLESS (which I am), one of the reasons for me getting such a late start yesterday was because I spent part of the morning on a Job Interview and then fielded a couple of other job related calls.

Seems there's people out there who want me to go back to work....

Haven't they read my blog and seen what a Worthless Individual I am?

Oh well - we'll see how it goes...

I think I got the California Cycling Bum thing down pretty good....

Should I put that on
My resume'?

Some learnings from this trip so far.... Things I already knew but have to be re

1. Don't mess with God. He rules. And when you don't respect the Power, you end up in a rear naked choke having to tap out.... Or in a knee bar... Ouch!

2. Bargain for Quality....

This is actually a 2-fer...

First, you don't get what you don't ask for. You never know what people are willing to do on anything until you ask them. Be nice.  Think about what you want.... Think about what they want...

And then imagine a path for each of you to meet in the middle.

Second -

Buy good quality stuff...

Good Bike from a reputable and trustworthy bike shop.

Best panniers you can get - for me that's hands down - Ortlieb.

Best Overbuilt racks to carry those panniers - Old Man Mountain is my choice.

Great quality food. Don't know how much those 2 handmade sandwiches cost me this morning - probably $10 apiece - but they were made with the best of everything and I will remember that meal for the rest of my life.

Good quality lodging - pick a good place in a good location and ask for a better deal. Blue Heron Inn in Mendocino and Breakers Inn in Gualala are 2 great examples of that.

3. Finally...

Take time to listen...

To Yourself...

What do you need?

Where does it hurt?

What are you hungry for?

What do You want to do?

There's a difference between it being all about You....

And taking care of You...

Find the Line...

Find Your Balance...

And Live Your Life.
