One Bad Expedition Bike for my 2000 mile Pacific Coast Odyssey

The preparation for my Seattle to San Diego bicycle tour is nearing completion.

Here are the highlights of this epic adventure:

Fly to Seattle on Saturday, 06/09/12

Spend 8 days in Washington much of which will be exploring the beauty, splendor and diverse habitats and regions of Olympic National Forest.

Spend 8 days in Oregon hugging the coast line and camping out at state parks and beaches the whole way.

Spend 40 days in California staying in parks like Jedediah Smith Redwoods and Mendocino Headlands State Parks with a layover in Tomales State Park so I can explore the Point Reyes National Seashore.

56 days total with 17 "Rest" days where I stay in one place for more than a day and cycle and hike that area.

2039 miles overall.

1296 miles to San Francisco where I likely spend a few days to recover and get my bike worked on.

I have left a multi-day "schedule cushion" in San Francisco for contingency.

I may store my bike in SF and fly back home for a few days.  That is an option.

743 miles from San Francisco to San Diego.

I plan on staying at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and staying spending a few days in the Santa Monica Mountains NRA.

I'll then spend a couple of days in LA before finishing the ride to San Diego.

I "slow down" a bunch in California and sight see in many places along the way as described above.

I plan to have my family join me in San Diego for 4 - 5 days before flying back the first week of August.

To do something like this you have to have the right equipment and I think I've put together the ultimate combination of reasonable cost, durability, comfort, go anywhere capability and downright Good Looks ....

And now let's talk about the Bike!

So without further adieu I present to you the Beast that will sit between my legs for 2000 miles and Own the West Coast from Canada to Mexico.

Here's the specs:

2007 Trek 3700

Old Man Mountain Pioneer front and rear racks

Ortlieb waterproof front and rear panniers, rack bag and handlebar bag
I ordered Bontrager LT3 Hardcase Plus tires which came in today and will be put on the rims before it's boxed up for the flight.

So what's in the bags?

Everything to sustain life in the wild for 56 days.

Shelter, Clothing, Food and a way to make Fire...

That's all it takes to sustain and enjoy life....

All the rest is just fluff.

More to come tomorrow.
