I'll have the Usual....at Brazos Bend State Park

By the usual, I mean my standard path I take. 

I typically park at the 40 Acre Lake parking lot and then take the West and North side of 40 Acre past the Observation Tower and along the Spillway Trail to the west side of Elm lake and then loop around Horseshoe Lake and the Big Creek loop Trail. Backtrack and go around Elm and back to the east side of Hale and out. 

The next couple of posts will give you a virtual tour of that path with comments added as appropriate.

One of the thousands of coots. 

Anhinga drying his wings. They have to do this because unlike most waterfowl, the anhinga (and cormorants) have no oil glands so they can more easily stay submerged while diving for fish. They also do not have hollow bones like most other birds. 

So when they want their wings dry they stand up
in this sacrifix pose and dry their wings in the sun.  Pretty Cool!

Little Blue Herons are abundant here and are expert fishermen. 

And lots of Yellow Crowned Night Herons.
