When I got to Lake Mineral Wells SP, I got Campsite #28, unloaded my stuff, set up camp and went for a hike.
Next morning I realized I had a neighbor in the next campsite down.
That day I met David Peterson....turns out David has a passion for cars - old cars - old fast cars - he builds them, goes to car shows, does the whole 9 yards.
David looked about 35 and was actually 50 - another Mineral Wells drinker I guess.
This guy was quiet, relatively unexpressive in his manner of speaking but he liked to talk and I liked to listen..... and talk... so we ended up having several good conversations over the course of my 3 days at LMWSP.
It was kinda like having a next door neighbor drop in just to chat....you remember when it used to be like that?
David is kind of a loner like me..... he was there in his mini-motor home with his cat to read, get out and walk around and talk with his neighbors.... this guy knows how to relax!
I learned several things about David while I was there....
At my camp site, my picnic table was about 40 - 50' from the water and electricity supply. I could charge my cell phone and netbook as long as I had them over at the electrical outlet.... 50' from the picnic table..... see the problem?
I didn't bring an extension cord....'bout the only thing I didn't bring.... I unloaded the kitchen sink and shower and hooked it up to the water supply when I got there.
So I needed a 50' extension cord, so I think David is a mechanical kind of guy - works on cars - maybe he's got an extension cord.... so I walk over and ask him.
First thing I notice when I walk over is the mini-motor home David's in.
It's an older model mini motor home setup on a Chevrolet C-30 chassis..... when I say older I mean 1996 model, so that's 14 years old....
This thing is immaculate - I mean it's clean, polished, ain't got a scratch on it - looks like it just came off the showroom floor..... so first of all, I'm impressed because I appreciate people who take care of their stuff, cause I'm like that.
I don't have a whole lot of "things" but I figure if it's worth buying it's worth taking care of - it was obvious David felt the same way.
I knock on the door and ask David if he's got an extension cord and David says "Let me look".
He comes outside and opens up a storage locker on the back end of his immaculate 14 year old mini-motor home and starts pulling out plastic storage containers....not individual stuff haphazardly thrown into an box....stout plastic storage containers that are labeled.
At this point, my impressometer is pegged out because I realize this guy takes care of his stuff AND he's organized...
So he gets to this storage container and opens it up and I look down into it and there neatly rolled up is an extension cord like I never seen before.... I mean you could have hooked up New York City to this thing.... I mean this was a cord....wasn't one of those little orange spindly extension cords you get at Walmart for $7.99 - this cord probably ate about 10 of those cords for breakfast. In the box, David also had a complete lighting set and other electrical connections.
So this guy takes care of his stuff AND he's organized AND he buys high quality, stout stuff.
I used the extension cord the whole time I was there.
What did I think of David? - I'll just say this - me and David got along just fine!
