At the Oldest University in Europe - Heidelberg University.
Was heading toward the river, that is the Neckar River, with nothing specific in mind but something to eat, a cold beer and a charge for my iPhone - you know the basics of life... And found it all -
At the University of Heidelberg cafeteria.
When I entered the student common area I knew right away this place was special. With the Energy of Youth tempered with the fact it was established in honor of Ruprecht I of the Palatinate (where the word "palace" comes from) in 1386. No - not 1836 - but 1386.
So I went into the eating area to take a look around. And was really pleased and relaxed with what I saw. Relaxed sounds kinda weird in that context but that's what I felt. Here were young people from all walks of life at the oldest university in Europe and they were eating and studying and laughing and talking and I just walked right into the middle of this - accidentally - randomly - for some purpose.
And suddenly I didn't feel so old anymore. When you are surrounded by young people with the energy of youth and the power of an unbridled open mind, you kinda pick up some of that.
So I walked around looking - one thing I was looking for was an electrical outlet - and found it.
Then I ask if you have to be a student to eat here - "No".
Ok - so far so good - question - Do you serve beer here? "Yes"
Hmmm now let me recollect what I was looking for -
Food - check.
Beer - check.
Electricity - check.
Hell - sign me up. I'm all in.
So I figure out the loading procedure - you know - how you get your tray and your plate and your food and all that jazz and I just dive in the pool and come up with....A delicious plate of food. A beer and a university newsletter.
Delicious and juicy roast pork, sausage, beef, potatoes, asparagus, tomatoes, cucumbers and on and on an a dark beer and a brochure I can't read but love looking at the pictures.
You know it's weird - when you don't have an agenda and you just
LET THINGS HAPPEN
instead of
MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
sometimes things work out just fine.
Bears keeping in mind, don't you think?

Yummy!!
