Supper fit for a King!

All grilled over an open mesquite fire-
Jimmy Dean Hot Pork Sausage
Turkey Sausage
Zucchini
Bell Pepper
Onion
w/ fresh avocado w/ lemon juice, tomatoes, jalapeños and Mezzeta olive medley and 1 slice of Monterey Jack Cheese thrown in and washed down w/ a Fat Tire Amber Ale.

I got your Caveman!

Hey ATB - talking about CaveMan - when's the last time you cooked like this?

Set up at South Llano River SP

At camp site 25 - gonna take a little recon on my mountain bike but so far I like what I see.
Lots of mountain bike trails and Junction is only 6 miles away and it has several Mexican Food Restaurants... Only negative so far is I'm on VZW Extended Network even in Junction so no 3G - ugh!
But that's OK - I like a challenge!

Must be pretty far out there because I lost the Data connection on my IPhone - now we're getting somewhere!

Emu Alert!

On 377 between Mason and Junction Tx

Thanks to Marbles Falls Bikes / Mike's Bikes

Can't leave ILSP / Marbles Falls area without saying thank you to Mike McKenna for fixing my Trek 3700.
If you need anything bike related when you're in the area give Mike a call.

Loaded up and moving out

Headed to South Llano River State Park!
See ya there.

Back at ILSP

Done with the loop. Did a few extra miles on Lakeshore Drive so ended up w/ 30.7 miles in 2 he's 13 mins for a 13.7 mph average. Gonna check on a camp site at South Llano River SP and then load 'em up and move 'em out!

Heading for Buchanan Dam on 29

Day 5: Good Thursday Morning!

Finally slept through the night! First night on this trip.
Both knees feel better and I'm anxious to get on my 27 mile loop so I'm having a cold cave man breakfast:
Golden Raisins, Mixed Nuts, Banana and PB washed down w/ a Creatine Mix.
Put out some birdseed for my feathered friends and am watching them while I eat.
Will send pic of the loop map in a bit.

Road Tripping' w/ my 2 Favorite Allies

From the Red Hit Chili Peppers "Road Tripping" -
Road trippin' with my two favorite allies
Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies
It's time to leave this town
It's time to steal away
Let's go get lost
Anywhere in the U.S.A.

Chorus:
Let's go get lost
Let's go get lost
Blue you sit so pretty
West of the one
Sparkles light with yellow icing
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun
Just a mirror for the sun

Today I took it easy, sat around the campfire and picked up my Trek 3700 from Marble Falls Bikes. Mike McKenna did a great job on it and also installed 2 new gnarly Mavis tires on it.
I came back to ILSP and ride around the park for an hour and then watched the sun set over Inks Lake while enjoying a Fat Tire over the campfire.
My right knee is OK - just some bruising but my left knee (the bum one) is hurting is bad I can't walk very far on it so I couldn't hike today like I wanted  to.
The good news is I can still ride a bike and that's what this blog is all about.
My plan right now is to get up early in the morning, do the 27 mile road loop I had planned and then load up and  hit the road southwest to South Llano River State Park which is south of Junction Tx.
With what I have right now in my truck I am totally self sustained and could park hop indefinitely....
Road Tripping' Baby somewhere in the USA!

Day 4: I guess I could do worse...

Lake View - check
Camp fire - check
Hot Breakfast cooked over camp fire - check
Birds singing all around me - check
Sun coming up over the trees - check
Yeah - I think this is gonna be a Great Day!

Creature of Habit

I got my Trek 3700 mountain bike dropped off at Marble Falls Bicycles, washed my clothes, washed my truck, re-supplied R Walmart in MF, drive to Inks Lake State Park.
I got the same camp site I had on my bicycle tour to Santa Fe NM back in Dec 2009 - #333. I think I'm the only one on that side I the park.
I got my camp site and then drove back to the Hoover Valley Cafe where I did the YouTube video in April 2010.
Some things are so good they just bear repeating!

How can this be?

I leave the Gulf Coast for the Hill Country for many reasons one of which was cooler climate and I just found out tomorrow will be  in the 80s possibly the hottest February day ever in Austin. As my wife would say "You're lucky". Thanks for that!

Battle of Wounded Knee

Not too bad... It actually looked worse before I washed the blood off that was running down my leg.
Gonna head to Marble Falls and drop off the mountain bike at MF Bike shop, wash some clothes, eat and then head on to Inks Lake SP.

And He's Up!

Oh well - it happens so I got back on the bike and finished the loop.

Man Down!

Well, my son advised me to take less risk over the next couple of days so I decided to do a 3 hr mountain bike loop on the horse trail at PFSP. I thought I was getting the hang of it so I came down off the hill the other side of this creek at full speed, hit the bottom, the bike stopped - I did not.
Results - bent the front brake lever and the handlebars on the left side and put a pretty good gash on my right knee along w/ some rock rash and a skinned knuckle on my right hand. Guess I better turn down the AC/DC next time and listen to my son. NOT!

Day 3: Same Place Different Day Different Surface Different Bike

Taking my Trek 3700 on the dark bolder Horse Trail this morning.

Since I'm on a Roll...

Got to relate this little anecdote on child rearing - true story.
Yesterday when I was walking around the campsites at PFSP, there was this group of kids playing in this one area running up and down the road - all beautiful children obviously well cared for. I noticed this one tow-headed boy probably 4 - 6 years old - looked like he could have been a child model or something.
Well the little dude had a sharp stick in his hand - kinda looked like a sharpened wood stake ... Like you kill vampires with or that you fall with while running and impale yourself with and die instantly especially if you're a little kid.
Well you know me - I couldn't stand to see the kid die right in front of me so as he runs up to this nice looking lady - coulda been his Mom - I don't know. I speak up politely and say "Excuse Ma'am - that little kid is running around w/ a sharp stick in his hand".
And what does she say?
"Duly noted"
Huh? WTH?

Random Musing - You can't run your life off an IPhone

Every now and then I'll do a DA2W blog entry that has nothing to do w/ cycling but everything to do w/ Discovery.
Let me begin this ramble by saying I have become the proud owner and user of an IPhone 4S.
I held off from getting one for a long time because Verizon didn't have the IPhone and I wasn't switching from Verizon.
Then Verizon got the IPhone and I had some other dumb excuses for not getting one - maybe I was scared. Who knows? Doesn't matter - I got one about 2 weeks ago and I can understand now what the big deal is. It is a simple, easy to use intuitive tool that combines  many tasks, features and functions in a basic building block of communication, Internet access, camera / video, computer, entertainment center. That basic building block can then be enhanced, extended, customized and made much more powerful w/ hundreds of thousands of apps. Incredible concept, Operating system, Hardware design, User interface, everything. Hell - I think they should declare it the 8th wonder of the world... But it's not.
Now for the hook - I see too many people, families, companies - whomever or whatever - using their Smart phones, IPads, computers, flat panel TVs, you name it in such a way that they have cut out the human element.
The ability of the human mind and the collaboration  of many human minds goes exponentially behind the sum of all Internet communication and knowledge.
I just got done w/ a work assignment w/ a company that shall obviously remain nameless. They hired me to study, collect data, do evaluations and make recommendations on a particular project. I worked for months and did tons of work creating documents to organize and analyze data so that it could be presented to and communicated with this company's management. Short and meaningless responses to questions, requests for input and attempts to schedule project review meetings were always "Sent from my IPhone". Not one face to face meeting or communication for months!
Needless to say, the project has made no progress.
WHY?
Because you can't manage your company, raise your family or Live Your Life .... From an IPHone.
Oh and by the way - this blog entry was SENT FROM MY IPHONE!

Finish of the last message

As I was saying before my thumb went a millimeter too far down and hit the Send button - I had the best Pork Carnitas of my life at El Charro's in Johnson City Tx so there's another Discovery for you. If you're staying at PFSP or just passing through JC and you have a hankering for some great Mexican Food then El Charro's your place! Right now I'm sitting at my campsite drinking a Shiner and watching a Whitetail Buck chase a young doe - only in the Texas Hill Country!

Back at my Home away from Home

Campsite 12 at PFSP. Pretty good ride today for an Old Fat Man in a Blue Shirt - 44 up and down miles through the heart of the Texas Hill Country in 3 hrs 42 mins for an 11.8 mph average. The cramps in my legs from yesterday were gone and I pushed as hard as I could today hitting 35 mph on several of the downhills. As I always tell my wife - Any ride where you don't get hit, don't hit the ground and don't have a flat was a great ride. Couple that w/ a 44 mile loop through the Texas Hill County and I'll give it 2 Thumbs Up. Oh I almost forgot to tell you - I had the best Pork Carnitas of my life at El Charro's in

Home Stretch

Listening to "Closer to the Heart" by Rush as I go with the wind and take in the scenery on 3232.

Ok... Now I'm the Blue Dot

Getting close to taking a left on 3232 for the last side of the box route. I'll have the wind at my back on 3232 so maybe I can do a little better. I can handle the grades but the freakin' wind just gets in my face... Ha ha - another funny. I think the endorphins are kicking in. Hopefully I'll make it back to PFSP before I go limp on the bike!

Sustenance

Ok I'm working on losing weight so I'll have fajitas and sub guacamole and pico for the rice and beans - how's that?

Roller Coaster!

When you can't see the bottom from the top you know it's steep. I'm hitting these bottoms at about 32 mph in 27th gear and crawling to the top at about 6 mph in 3rd gear. Them truckers ain't got nothing on me on changing gears!

On FM 2766 to Johnson City

It's starting to clear a little and getting warmer and windier. Joy Joy! No really - No complaints. Bike is working fine - William is working fine. Now if I could just lose that 15 lbs. Oh yeah that's why I'm doing this. Let's get to it.

Now ain't that pretty...

And the bike looks good too! Just did 6 miles in the road to the swimming area and the falls to see how my leg handled it. Seemed  OK do I'm heading out on the 36 mile loop. The hardest part is the road into the park. It's got some HC hills there so if I can get out of the park I may not get back into the park! Ha Ha! See you in Johnson City.

Today's Route

It's overcast but should clear up later today. Going to stick to my plan and do the 36 mile loop shown above. Going to get suited up and ready and get started.

Speaking of Cave Man...

Looking kinda Cro Maggie there buddy!

Now that's what I'm talking about

Finished product topped off w/ fresh tomatoes and basil... Call it Cave Man w/ a touch of class!

Day 2: The Makings of a Cave Man

Lots of talk about the Paleo diet lately. Here's my version: Jimmy Dean Hot Pork Sausage, BP, onion, jalapeƱo and eggs. I'll show you what it looks like assembled and cooked in a minute. How's that for a Cave Man Booyah!

End of Day 1: A Great End to a Day of Ups and Downs

Sitting over a fire at camp site #12 at Pedernales Falls State Park - same site I had last time I came to the park w/ my daughter 6 years ago. Just got done w/ a dinner of grilled sausage, bell peppers, onions, jalapeƱos w/ a fresh salad of avocado, tomatoes, basil dressed w/ olive oil and washed down w/ 2 ice cold Shiner Bock Spring Ales. Got my Thermarest mat and Coleman mummy bag stretched out in the bed if the truck so I can see the stars. Listening to Led Zeppelin Kashmir as the fire goes to coals. Yeah there were some ups and downs today but I'd have to say it was a Great Day spent Discovering Texas on 2 Wheels.

Not too bad. 42.2 miles in 3 hrs 21 mins for a 12.5 mph avg but lots of stops. Will get better as I ride more.

Old Post Rd

Over the river we go. Leg is charley horse. Coming and Going. No blood No bone sticking out Quit bitching and keep pedaling!

Taking the Back Way into San Marcos

Taking Old Stagecoach Road that winds through beautiful ranch and farm land... About 5 miles to go.. And the cramp in my left leg has become a golf  ball right above my knee... Really cool looking!

I'm the Little Man

Stopping at the Hays City Store to get some Gatorade; about to turn east on 150 toward Kyle.

Halfway around the San Marcos Loop

On FM 3237 between Wimberly and Hayes and just crossed the Blanco River. Having cramping problems in the teardrop of my left quad; something that's been bothering me recently. Otherwise everything is working great and it's a beautiful day for cycling. Remind me to sign up for an iPhone tracker so y'all can log on and track me.

Day 1 of the Hill Country Hop

This is the beginning of a bike tour I am doing a little differently. I will drive from
Texas State Park to Park and do road and mountain bike rides in and around the parks. I am in San Marcos Tx this morning and will do the above 42 mile loop and then drive to Pedernales State Park near Johnson City Tx and camp out there. After a week of rain it's finally cleared up and I'm ready to Discover the Texas Hill Country on 2 Wheels!
